summary of what we did in the lesson - 1/2/11

Typical conventions of dance genre research from 1/2/11

The typical conventions of the dance genre opening scene usually consist of scenes of dancing followed by flashbacks of dancing/ the main characters past which then has the characters name appearing and sets the motive/ pace/ storyline of the film (i.e step up 2) .

fonts: Urban chalk style
duration: 1 second/ 3-10 for the dancers
placement on the screen: centre of the screen
content: clips of street dancers

However some of the films don't follow the conventions i.e Honey which starts off in a bar in a nightclub with the main character but doesnt tell you the storyline in the first few minutes nor does it have any dancing in the first 2 minutes of the film it also uses

Fonts: block capitals , blue , has a shining effect going across it.
Duration :1/2 seconds each.
Placement on the screen: bottom right corner of the screen with some more towards the middle and Bottom left of the screen.
Content: actors, production company , "soundtrack by"

Rough cut -24/1/11

This is a screenshot took on the 24/1/11 this screenshot shows our rough-cut of the opening sequence (all the footage in order as shown in the story boards)

In the lesson, my role was to cut down some of the scenes so that we could reduce some of the time along with changing the contrast saturation etc to make the scenes look better and improve the quality of the opening sequence.

I have learned how to cut down scenes and change the saturation etc.

We have changed some ideas from our storyboard for instance we firstly got rid of the "8 months later" and also changed several scenes round to fit with the voice over better.

To finish this opening sequence we still need to cut down alot of time , add in transistions and do the credits , along with add in the music for the dance scenes we have this is due to the cameras not being the best quality so therefore we have to edit the scenes to improve them.

"Live 2 Dance"

Camera moves up the body to show the characters torso.

CREDITS OF CHARACTERS NAMES APPEAR OVER THE TOP OF THE CLIP. THIS HAPPENS FOR ALL 5 MAIN CHARACTERS STARTING WITH THE LEAD WOMAN AND MOVING THROUGH THE OTHERS.
AFTER THE FINAL CREDITS HAVE GONE, FRAME GOES TO BLACK / DARK BUT THE MUSIC CONTINUES TO PLAY. OVER THE TOP OF THESE CREDITS, WE HEAR THE LEAD’S VOICE SAYING;

VIKKIE’S VOICE:
“Everyone has history. Everyone has things they have to fight through in life. Some serious. Others more psychological. Either way, life can be hard. When someone has a passion, a drive to succeed in something, they will take no mercy in getting there. People often do something as a form of distraction to get through these tough times. A lot of people turn to dance. Many start from the streets, but turn out to be the most out standing dancers in this world…”

The camera goes to a shot of a set of drawn curtains. We see dark silhouettes waiting behind the closed curtains.

Even on the most important night of their lives, the characters still bicker and argue behind the closed curtains. Low lighting (SHOT REVERSE SHOT):

DAVID'S VOICE:
"You don't deserve to be here. Giving up 'cos of injury. True dancers fight through it, not just give up!"

VIKKIE'S VOICE:
"Oh shut up. I'm the one who got you here. If it wasn't for me, you'd probably be dead on the streets!"

DAVID'S VOICE:
"Oh you know what, screw this. I can't be bothered. You are pathetic. I'm gone!"

LONG SHOT and tracking shot as David starts to walk off.

STEVE'S VOICE:
"What you doing you idiot. Get your arse back here!"

Steve moves towards David, grabs his top and pulls him back. David turns round to Steve and pushes him backwards.

DAVID'S VOICE:
(MID SHOT) "Get your hand off of me."

David pushes Steve's hand off of him. They then start to get confrontational.

STEVE'S VOICE:
"OR WHAT!? (laughs) Get your fucking act together now."

DAVID'S VOICE:
"Don't swear at me."

STEVE'S VOICE:
"FUCK OFF YOU PRICK."

David lashes out and punches Steve in the face. They start a violent fight when Vikkie runs over and attempts to pull them apart but gets hit in the process by David.

STEVE'S VOICE:
"You twat. You just smacked a girl."

DAVID'S VOICE:
"She aint much of a girl! You're more feminine than her!"

Steve and David both go into confrontation mode and start square up to each other.

VIKKIE'S VOICE:
"OII! (pushes them apart) You're both idiots, just shut up! Sort yourself out and get back over there, we've got a show to do! We've come so far if you don't want this then fuck off, you ain't ruining my dream."

Steve and David both sort themselves out and muffle under their breath.

STEVE VOICE:
(muttering) "We're good, we're good...sorry yeah"

DAVID'S VOICE:
"Let's just do this yeah?"

Vikkie pushes the guys over to their positions.

We start to see the curtains open and the camera then flicks to the audiences point of view, as we see the dance troupe step out onto a lit stage and begin to dance. We then see the footage start to slow down and shudder.
