Group 4 media piece : Live to Dance

This is our group's (group 4) media piece: Live to Dance

Foundation portfolio evaluation : question 7 : Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product.?

Looking back at the preliminary task towards the opening sequence i can see that i have learnt to film more effectively, secondly i have learned how to edit alot more as ive learned how to add in transistions, cut scenes, change the saturation.
I have also learned how to use blogger/embed videos onto posts which allows me to improve the quality of my posts as i can now put in clips from our opening sequence and other sequences i analyze etc.

I have also learned how to upload videos on youtube aswell, this means that our media product can be viewed by everyone all over the world meaning we could get a reaction from the public of how they feel about it.

Lastly i have also learned how to take a media product/film from concept to cinema as we went through all the stages (albeit in a shorter time span) therefore giving me a true taste of the media industry and what its like to produce a media product.

Foundation portfolio evaluation : question 6 : what have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the course of creating the media product i have learned that youtube can take some time - sometimes long, sometimes short amount of time to process  a piece of media/video

i have also learned how to use a sony handy cam

 - and how to upload it to the mac

, i also learned how to use imovie and change the saturation , speed , add in transistions effects and cut clips of media that we dont want to use in the rough-cut/ final product.

Foundation Portfolio evaluation : question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

This is the opening sequence with the addition of annotations to address how we plan to attract/address our audience for question 5 of the Foundation portfolio evaluation.

Monday 7 March 2011

Foundation portfolio evaluation: Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our film "Live2Dance" would be associated with the dance genre of film, more specifically the street dance subgenre. Therefore this film would be more likely to attract dancers/fans of the dance genre of film as they would enjoy these films and like to go see them when a new one comes out (i.e the Step-up series of films.), which can also suggest that we should target this audience if we were to advertise it/release it as a major film production.

Their tastes are more likely to be similar to the characters in the film as they represent real people who dance. Our audience would also be likely to listen to a lot of rap or upbeat music as if they are dancers then this is the best genre of music to dance to due to the beat in the songs, they would also be likely to shop in shops that sell clothes for dancers or shops that sell trainers, hoodies, tracksuits etc as this is the typical costumer/clothing that is conventional in the dance genre of film , they would also be more likely to watch tv programs such as "got to dance" on sky one which is basically a program about dancers in a competition to win money etc.

This is a picture of "jasmine" the audience member who i have created based on our audience research , she is a "typical" 17 year old girl having grown up in a south eastern area, she also likes to dance and enjoys dance films as they help motivate her to succeed and become a famous dancer, she typically wears clothes that allow her to dance quite easily and since having grown up in an estate has very little money therefore looks to dancing as a way to become successful.

Foundation portfolio evaulation: Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Tuesday 1 March 2011

Foundation Portfolio evaluation: Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our media product, vikkie plays a female protaganist who aims to achieve her dreams of becoming a famous and successful dancer who is willing to do anything and everything in order to reach her dreams and become a success.

"Nora clark" from step up (2006) is a female protaganist who is a upperclass student at a prestigious dance school who teaches ballet and wants to become a famous ballet dancer and works hard to achieve her dreams.

There are many similarities between the 2 characters:

Firstly both are driven by the goal of becoming a successful dancer, and both work hard to achieve their dreams.

Secondly they both wear similar clothes (which suit the styles of dance) which can suggest that maybe both the characters have a similar taste in clothes/dance style.

Both characters are also major characters in both their films as they both have a leading role as the main protaganists.

However there are also many differences between both the characters:

Firstly vikkie's character is from a lower class background, this would therefore suggest her character is alot more driven to succeed as she has nothing else in her life that she can rely on , therefore this could be her only shot to success.

Secondly , while the costumes for both characters are similar, they are also different, as vikkies character dances in streetdance style whereas Nora clark performs ballet.

Thirdly , Nora is alot more passive compared to vikkies character, as in "live2dance" the characters are constantly bickering with eachother and vikkies is the more dominant one where as nora seems to dislike arguing with channing tatums character.

Lastly nora clark is also the second main character whereas vikkie is the primary character in live2dance.

Foundation portfolio evaluation: Q1: In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.(Part 2 of 2)

"Live2Dance"

Secondly i have looked at our media piece and analysed it and wrote about how film follows the genre/conventions of the dance genre.

1:Text colour. At 0:05 we can see black and red text colours, this follows the conventions of the dance genre as the text colours tend to be either whites blacks or reds.

2:Text style and font. At 0:01 we can see a chalk style of text and a big font, this therefore implys that the film is urban and this therefore follows the conventions of the dance genre as most films are typically set in urban/suburban settings.

3:setting and location. At 1:40 we can see the stage which is used in the opening sequence to show the dance championship scene we included, this is conventional because big spacious areas, more specifically stages areans and dance studios are used to show the dance championship scenes.

4:clothing and costume. At 0:18 we can see david's characters costume, this follows the convention of the genre as most characters costumes tend to be cheap clothes that can be used to dance in very easily, specifically trainers tracksuits tshirts vests etc, which David is shown wearing.

5:title name. At 0:03 we can see the title name "Live2Dance" this is conventional to the dance genre as many films such as streetdance 3d tend to have a reference to dance in their name or numbers and appear to be an urban version of normal words.

6:colour adjustment (editing). At 0:15 we can see the colour for David's scene to be a black and weight coloured scene, this therefore follows the conventions of the scene as colour editing is used in many flashback scenes in the opening sequences however we also broke away from the conventions as we went black and white whereas most other dance films use a orangeish tinge colour for flashback scenes.

7:lighting. At 1:21 we can see dark lighting , this breaks the conventions of the dance genre as most films in the dance genre tend to have bright lighting and not dark lighting unless its a night time scene.

8:transitions. At 1:37 we can see a transistion , fade to white this breaks a convention of the dance genre as most dance films tend to avoid the use of transitions as they dont flow with the scenes very well , an exception to this in recent time could be streetdance 3d , which features alot of transistions.

9:genre. This film follows the conventions of the genre as at 0:06 we can see someone dancing with feet , this follows the conventions of the genre as scenes of people dancing are usually quite a major part to show a film is part of a genre/ especially a dance film.
